International cooperation: 40 New COST Actions

The FNR is pleased to inform that COST in June 2019 has decided to support 40 new Actions in all fields of science and research, starting in late Summer/Autumn 2019. COST Actions are networks of researchers all over Europe and abroad and Luxembourg researchers are strongly encouraged to participate, especially early-career researchers. The next deadline to propose a new COST Action is Thursday, 5 September 2019.

10 of the 40 Actions involve Luxembourg co-proposers.

More than half of the 40 network proposals cover at least two OECD (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) fields of science and technology, while 5% cover at least three fields.

Natural sciences lead the way as the most represented field of science (53% of the Actions), followed by engineering and technology (30%), social sciences (28%), agricultural sciences (20%), medical and health sciences (18%) and humanities (10%).

The 40 successful proposals in figures:

  • 37% of proposal leaders are early-career investigator
  • 45% of proposal leaders are women
  • 72% of the proposals feature participants from SMEs and industry
  • 44% of all proposers work in an Inclusiveness Target Country
  • 75% of the future networks have attracted participants from all over the world (COST International Partner Countries/Near Neighbour Countries)

Luxembourg researchers are strongly encouraged to join the networks. For each action, two researchers can be nominated per country. In order to be nominated, please provide the CNC (COST National Coordinator), Helena Burg, with the completed ‘COST action form’.

Next Call for COST Actions

The next collection date for proposals for new COST Actions is 5 September 2019 at 12:00 noon (CET).

Two collection dates will take place in 2020 (Spring and Autumn).

Participants are invited to submit COST Action proposals contributing to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal knowledge advancement and development of Europe. Multi- and interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged.

The Open Call Action proposal submission, evaluation, selection and approval (SESA) procedure is fully science and technology-driven and will ensure a simple, transparent and competitive proposal evaluation and selection process, reflecting the bottom-up, open and inclusive principles of COST.

Participants planning to submit a proposal for a COST Action will need to refer to the SESA guidelines on the COST Documents and Guidelines page.
