Lindsay Flynn and Etienne Fodor awarded FNR ATTRACT Fellowships

5 Feb 2021

The FNR has awarded two new ATTRACT Fellowships: Ass. Prof Dr Lindsay Flynn is awarded 2 MEUR for a project investigating the relationship between housing policies and inequality. Ass. Prof Dr Etienne Fodor is awarded 1.5 MEUR for a project on the topic of active matter. Both projects will be conducted at the University of Luxembourg over five years.

PayPal, University of Luxembourg and FNR announce first public-private University Chair in Digital Financial Services

Professor Gilbert Fridgen has been appointed the inaugural PayPal-FNR PEARL Chair in Digital Financial Services which will allow him to conduct scientific research at the digital transformation of financial services and the intersection of finance and technology. The partnership supports the Luxembourg Government’s aim of making the country a world leader in innovative financial services.

FNR funds Luxembourg Parkinson’s Study with an additional 6 million euros

In spring 2015, the National Centre for Excellence in Research on Parkinson’s Disease (NCER-PD) was created as the very first inter-institutional research programme of its kind in Luxembourg. It represents a joint effort between five partners that unite their complementary expertise for Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) has committed 8.3 million euros to this collaborative research programme for the past four years. At the end of this first funding period, the programme has been evaluated with outstanding scores by an international jury of experts. This paved the way for its second phase until May 2023, funded with an additional 6 MEUR.

Professor Sean Takats is awarded an FNR PEARL Chair

15 July 2019

Professor Dr Sean Takats, an internationally renowned expert on digital history, will start his research work in Luxembourg in October 2019. Backed by an FNR PEARL Chair from the FNR, Sean Takats joins the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), one of the interdisciplinary research centres of the University of Luxembourg. The PEARL programme, funded by the FNR, provides competitive funding to attract top researchers in strategic research areas for Luxembourg.

Presentation of the 2018 FNR annual report

24 May 2019

The year 2018 was marked by the new multi-year agreement 2018-21 signed between the FNR and the Government, but also by the work of redefining national research priorities for which the FNR was mandated by its supervisory ministry. In 2018, the FNR evaluated 735 proposals submitted under its various instruments and granted funding to 260 research projects. The FNR committed 72.1 MEUR to finance the selected projects.

FNR joins cOAlition S

04 September 2018

On 4 September, the FNR and 10 other national research funding organisations, with the support of the European Commission (EC) and the European Research Council (ERC), have launched cOAlition S, a joint initiative to make full and immediate Open Access to research publications a reality by 2020. The initiative is promoted by Science Europe, the association of national research funding and research performing organisations in Europe.

Presentation of the Annual Report 2017 of the Luxembourg National Research Fund and its 2018-21 strategy

The FNR reflects positively on 2017. A pivotal year for the FNR, as it marked both the end of the 2014-17 multiannual contract with the Government and paved the way for the new 2018-21 strategy. Over the last four years, it committed a total of 240 MEUR for the financing of 892 projects and grants.

Presentation of the Annual Report 2016 of the Luxembourg National Research Fund

The Luxembourg National Research Fund reflects positively on 2016. A year marked by the changes in its governing body, external evaluations, and by the successful launch of multiple big projects. All in all, 195 projects were retained for funding, representing around 33% of submitted proposals. Throughout its activities, the FNR pursued its mission of establishing a system of sustainable and internationally renowned research which will generate societal and economic impact in key strategic areas.

FNR and Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology foster their collaboration for the development of joint research projects

On Wednesday, 5 April 2017, the FNR signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The signature was witnessed by the Prime Ministers of both countries, Mr António Costa and Mr Xavier Bettel.

Luxembourg to strengthen its research activities in neuro-oncology and neurodegenerative diseases: Prof Michel Mittelbronn awarded an FNR PEARL Chair

At the beginning of January 2017, renowned neuropathologist Professor Dr. Michel Mittelbronn joined the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) in a joint appointment with the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg. Endowed with a 2,6 million euro FNR PEARL Chair, Professor. Michel Mittelbronn will set up for the first time a diagnostic neuropathology unit at the LNS and build a research team together with LIH and LCSB to strengthen the research activities in neuro-oncology (at LIH) and neurodegenerative diseases (at LCSB).

Luxembourg and Singapore establish bilateral research collaborations

15 November 2016

Officials from Luxembourg and Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on research collaborations today. Signed between the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore (NRF), the MOU sets out the joint-funding of collaborative research projects in areas of mutual interest. This was witnessed by our respective Prime Ministers, Mr Xavier Bettel and Mr Lee Hsien Loong.

Nouvelle présidente du conseil d’administration du Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR)

Le gouvernement réuni en conseil aujourd’hui a nommé Madame Véronique Hoffeld à la présidence du conseil d’administration du Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR). Madame Hoffeld, membre et vice-présidente du CA du FNR depuis novembre 2014, succède donc à Yves Elsen, président démissionnaire suite à sa nominationà la présidence de l’Université du Luxembourg. Le gouvernement a également proposé la nomination de Monsieur Thierry Wolter au poste de vice-président.Leurs mandats viendront à terme en novembre 2019.

Présentation du Rapport Annuel 2015 du Fonds National de la Recherche

Le Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) jette un regardpositif sur l’année 2015. Une année marquée d’une part par des changements dans sa gouvernance ainsi que dans son fonctionnement interne, et, d’autre part, le lancement réussi de plusieurs grands projets. En tout et pour tout, 187 projets représentant environ 30 % des demandes soumises, ont été retenus pour financement. Au travers de ses activités, le FNR poursuit sa mission de mettre en place un système de recherche durable et de renommée internationale qui engendrera des retombées significatives sur le plan sociétal et dans les secteurs économiques stratégiques pour le Luxembourg.

Prof Philippe Dubois is awarded an FNR PEARL Chair

21 April 2016

On September 1st, world-renowned material scientist Prof Philippe Dubois will join the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), endowed with a 4 million euro FNR PEARL Chair. Philippe Dubois will strengthen the LIST’s “Smart Materials” initiative and build a new research group in sustainable composite materials (SUSMAT). The aim of his research is to produce new sustainable composite materials out of renewable resources.

Luxembourg’s IT expert Lionel Briand receives the most prestigious research grant from the European Research Council

Professor Lionel Briand, FNR PEARL Chair and Vice Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg, has been awarded an “Advanced Grant” by the European Research Council (ERC) for his research in the field of software reliability and security. He is the first Luxembourg-based researcher to receive an Advanced Grant, the most prestigious of the European Commission grants.

C’est une des conclusions du rapport indépendant réalisé par le renommé Evaluation Centre3 de la Western Michigan University présenté par son directeur Chris L. S. Coryn lors du FNR Info Day.
