Submitted Abstract

The aim of this Outreach Activity is to raise awareness about air pollution amongst pupils and the general public by measuring air pollution in their daily environment. We aim to achieve this through workshops, organized by our expert Charel Wohl, for the LHCE high-school students to measure by themselves the air pollution they are exposed to. They will also explore a series of experiments that illustrate the role of the air pollution parameters in the climate and remote Arctic and Antarctic environment. During two interactive public lectures, one at the Lycée Hubert Clement and one at the MNHN, Charel will be sharing how he took similar measurements on research cruises to both polar oceans. During the break of the conferences, volunteer students will have the opportunity to share with the general public the experiments that they have been exploring earlier in the workshops. This will also be an opportunity for Charel to discuss his research with the general public. As a legacy, the handheld air quality measuring devices and the workshop handouts developed for this activity will be made available through polar.lu as an offer to interested high-schools to repeat the practical, but also to the Jonk Fuerscher Foundation for students that wish to design small research projects in related topics.
