Submitted Abstract

Nowadays, Digital Literacy is considered as an essential skill in the knowledge societies, both in private and professional life. To enable a country’s positive economic and societal change, citizens are required to develop new competencies, in particular related to the digital world. However, the vast majority of pupils in Luxembourg are currently trained in digital literacy only after the age of 14. Primary and secondary schools in Luxembourg (as in many other European countries) currently lack the educational materials and curriculum to train digital skills of pupils at younger ages.During the FNR Bee Creative for Kids project the Kniwwelino® was developed. It is a micro-controller platform complemented by a visual programming language that enables primary school pupils to carry out their own projects. As the Kniwwelino® embeds WiFi connectivity it is possible to set-up connected objects using Internet of Things technologies. To date, 4000 Kniwwelino® have been produced, 1150 children have already successfully created a project with Kniwwelino®, and 800 Kniwwelino® have been sold by our reseller, without any marketing activities. The market analysis for Kniwwelino®, conducted within the FNR Pathfinder Kniwwel2B project, shows that the best route to market is to address the educational market. Therefore, this Proof of Concept project aims to take the necessary steps in order to have Kniwwelino® accepted and supported by schools, teachers and the government. These concern the development of Kniwwelino@School as an extension of the current Kniwwelino® ecosystem, the integration of Kniwwelino® in school curricula, the conduction of pilot studies in Luxembourgish schools, and the preparation of the creation of or transfer to an exploitation entity.
