Submitted Abstract

The Goodyear STEM Student Challenge Goodyear challenges you and your classmates to design a clever machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overcomplicated fashion. We want you to be zany and outrageous while creating your own themed machine. The principles to be applied should rely on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The final task of your machine is to move a load of model tires with an inflatable Goodyear blimp. The blimp (approx. 84 cm in length) and model tires (2.50 cm in diameter) will be provided by Goodyear after successful team registration. Students may participate as part of a school group for a chance to showcase creativity and win great prizes. Groups should be fashioned in a multi-diverse (ethical and gender mix), co-educational (different school levels), and pluri-disciplinary (all skills mixed up, including STEM, languages, creative arts, cinematics, etc.) manner. All students from classes 4e/10e – 2e/12e can participate. Participants apply by creating a machine according to the Challenge description. The completed Group Application Entry and Essay, as well as the video of the machine in action, are to be sent to Goodyear by May 3, 2019. Only previously registered groups can participate in the Challenge (registration deadline: November 16, 2018). A panel of scientists and engineers will select the winners according to scoring criteria (see “Scoring – Points & Penalties” section). The 10 best teams will be invited to showcase their machine at the Live-Demo Day early July 2019, whereupon the final winners will be announced. Please note that your presence at the Live-Demo Day is compulsory to claim the prizes.
