Submitted Abstract

The European Conference on Data Analysis (ECDA) held by the German Classification Society – Gesellschaft für Klassifikation (GfKl) – and the French speaking Classification Society – Société Francophone de Classification (SFC) –, members of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS), focuses on data analysis, learning of latent structures in datasets, and unscrambling of knowledge. The society mainly contributing to the conference, the GfKl, holds its annual conference since 1977 and thus has a long-standing tradition of annual conferences. The SFC will also contribute substantially to the ECDA. It also holds annual conferences with the same scope of involved scientific disciplines. The first joint conference of the two societies will now take place in Luxembourg and will be hosted by the University of Luxembourg. This puts the UL in a position to present itself to an international scientific audience as an innovative university, centered on research, and primarily interested in the quality of the structure it offers to its researchers. The scientific program will include sessions with invited talks and contributed presentations from a broad range of topics. Special emphasis will be laid on interdisciplinary research and the interaction between theory and practice. The program will be complemented by a doctoral workshop for PhD students working on the conference topics. The conference also includes a workshop on Library and Information Science (LIS Workshop), dealing with the role of classification and data analysis in this domain. The broad range of relevant topics is illustrated by the following list of intended sections. Contributed papers from scholars and practitioners are invited on any of these as well as on related topics.Theory and Methods• Multivariate Statistical Methods• Exploratory Data Analysis• Clustering and Classification• Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning• Visualization and Scaling Methods• Evaluation of MethodsData Science• Data Pre-Processing• Text and Web Mining• Information Extraction and Retrieval• Personalization and Intelligent AgentsApplications• Marketing and Management Science• Banking and Finance• Production, Controlling, and OR• Biostatistics and Bioinformatics• Genome and DNA Analysis• Medical and Health Sciences• Archaeology and Geography• Linguistics and Statistical Musicology• Psychology and Education• Library ScienceThe European Conference on Data Analysis will take place from July 10 – 12, 2013 at the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Exchange Center in Luxembourg-Grund.
