About MSCA Individual Fellowships

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions are prestigious, bottom-up fellowships for postdocs and principal investigators early in their career. They provide funding for 12-24 months (up to 36 months for global fellowships) and aim to support the mobility and increase the employability of researchers in Europe.

The next deadline is September 12th. One important eligibility criterion is that the candidate cannot have lived and/or worked for more than 12 months in the country of the host institute where he/she wants to pursue their fellowship, in the three years preceding the deadline of the call. For example, a student who did his masters in Luxembourg, his 4 year PhD in Germany and who recently (after September 2017) started a postdoctoral position in Luxembourg would be eligible.

The fellowship includes the candidate’s salary, a family allowance if applicable, and research, training and management costs that will go to the host institute. The projects commonly include a secondment phase where the candidate can get further experience, for example in industry. A major aim of the MSCA fellowships is to increase the employability of postdocs.

The MSCA fellowships are competitive, but this year, candidates in Luxembourg will be eligible also for the Widening fellowships meaning that your chances of success will increase significantly.

There are 5 main types of MSCA individual fellowships:

  • The standard European fellowships: any nationality; moving from any country to Luxembourg
  • The global fellowships: include first a 12-24 month stay in a non-EU member state or associated country (e.g. China, US, Canada), followed by a 12 month fellowship in Luxembourg; for European or associated country citizens or long term residents only
  • The career restart fellowships: cannot have worked/lived for more than 36 months in the past 5 years in Luxembourg; must have taken a career break of 12 months or more prior to deadline
  • The reintegration fellowships: the candidate (European or associated country citizen or long term resident) has to come back to the EU from a non EU country (e.g. China, US, Canada) for this project; cannot have worked/lived for more than 36 months in the past 5 years in Luxembourg
  • The society and enterprise fellowships: cannot have worked/lived for more than 36 months in the past 5 years in Luxembourg; host institute must be non-academic, i.e. a company
  • The Widening fellowships, that Luxembourg is eligible for, work a bit differently. Candidates still choose one of the options listed above; if their proposal is successful, they will receive their fellowship; if the proposal was good but not good enough to be funded, it will go to a second list containing all other proposals from Widening countries that has a separate budget

About the workshop

The projects will be written jointly by the candidates and their host; for many candidates it will be the first time that they have to write down not only a scientifically solid project but also conceive the parts of the proposal that deal with project management, dissemination and scientific impact. For this reason, Luxinnovation, the National Contact Point for Horizon 2020, and the University of Luxembourg jointly organize a grant-writing workshop on June 11th where we will discuss these points. We will start at 14:00 and the workshop will take 2-3 hours, depending on the number of participants and questions.
