From 3 – 5 July, the FNR, represented by its Secretary General Marc Schiltz, attended the founding General Assembly of the International Science Council (ISC), formed after the merger of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and International Council for Science (ICSU). The Luxembourg National Research Fund is one of the founding members of the ISC and largely supports ISC’s mission to act as a global voice for science.
The Council convenes the scientific expertise and resources needed to lead on catalysing, incubating and coordinating impactful international action on issues of major scientific and public importance. With a broad range of co-sponsored international research programmes, networks and committees, its activities span a broad range of issues, from global sustainability, poverty, urban health and wellbeing and disaster risk reduction, to data, observing systems and science advice to governments.
The International Science Council is a non-governmental organisation with a unique global membership that brings together 40 international scientific Unions and Associations and over 140 national and regional scientific organisations including Academies and Research Councils. Daya Reddy, an internationally recognised mathematician from South Africa, was elected to the position of President at the Council’s founding General Assembly. He will represent the Council for its first three years.
