The University of Luxembourg has announced that FNR PEARL Chair Prof Jens Kreisel is to be the new Vice Rector for Research at the University of Luxembourg, starting in September 2018.
After receiving the opinion of the University Council, the Board of Governors of the University proposed to the government to appoint FNR PEARL Chair Prof Jens Kreisel Vice-Rector of the University of Luxembourg. Assuming office on 1 September 2018, Prof Kreisel will mainly be responsible for the areas research and innovation.
Brought up in Dortmund, Germany, Jens Kreisel (48) studied physics in Germany and France. In 1999, he obtained his PhD in materials science at the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble. Then, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford before joining the “Centre national de la recherche scientifique” (CNRS) in Grenoble, where he was appointed Research Director in 2009.
From 2008 to 2011, Prof Kreisel was deputy Vice President of international relations at Grenoble INP. He spent the academic year 2011/12 as a Visiting Professor at the University of Warwick before becoming Scientific Director of the Department of Materials Science at the Gabriel-Lippmann Public Research Centre, then he led the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).
In 2013, he obtained a PEARL grant from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), with which he came to Luxembourg to build up his research group at what is now the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). Since 2013, he has been an honorary professor at the University of Luxembourg and was appointed Adjunct Professor in May 2017.
Prof. Kreisel’s research interests lie at the interface of physics and materials science. The scientist is internationally recognised for his expertise in optical spectroscopy. You can find out more about his research in the video below.
Jens Kreisel lives in Luxembourg with his family and has extensive knowledge of the Luxembourgish and European research landscape.
