ESOF 2022: Call for individual travel grants

The FNR is offering 10 travel grants to excellent young researchers to participate at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 which takes place from 13 – 16 July 2022 in Leiden, Netherlands. Application deadline is 19 April, 2022.

ESOF is the biennial pan-European meeting dedicated to scientific research and innovation. At ESOF meetings leading scientists, researchers, business people, entrepreneurs and innovators, policy makers, science and technology communicators and the general public from all over the world discuss new discoveries and debate the direction that research is taking worldwide. It involves a unique career programme where the key objective is to provide career openings and targeted programmes for postgraduates and young researchers.

The 10th edition of ESOF will take place this year, in the European City of Science 2022, Leiden, in the Netherlands from 13 July to 16 July 2022. Details re. the ESOF conference programme can be accessed here.

The FNR offers 10 travel grants of 700 EUR as a contribution towards the ESOF participation costs (registration, travel, subsistence, accommodation, etc.).

Who can apply?

The call targets excellent young researchers (PhD or postdoc level) of any nationality, who are either based in Luxembourg or funded by the FNR abroad.

Interested candidates

  • deliver a complete application
  • commit themselves to participate onsite at ESOF for the full duration of the meeting.

Application & deadline

In order to apply, candidates have to complete and sign the ESOF application form (link to form) and join a CV based on the FNR template for narrative-style CV (link) (including an updated ORCID profile). Applications have to be submitted per Email to jill.mousel@fnr.lu by the deadline of Tuesday 19th April 2022. Upon submitting the application, applicants agree to the full acceptance of the rules and to the decision taken by the FNR.

Selection process

The selection of ESOF participants will be based on the following selection criteria:

  1. Excellence of the candidate
  2. Motivation to participate at ESOF

The selection will be undertaken by FNR and applicants will be informed by end of April of the outcome of the selection process. Upon information by the FNR of the successful application, beneficiaries must confirm within 5 working days that they accept the travel grant.

Management, payment of grants and onsite support by EuroScience

The FNR ESOF 2022 grant is a personal merit-based travel grant. Upon confirmation of participation by the grantee, the FNR will communicate the name and Email of the beneficiary to EuroScience, who manages the travel grant on behalf of the FNR.

EuroScience will provide all practical information and support for the grantees before the event and onsite.

The payment of the travel grant is as follows:

  • 50% (i.e. 350 EUR) of the grant will be paid upon proof of registration
  • 50% of the grant will be paid upon receipt of the proof of participation (c.f. below)

No cost statement or receipt is required.

The grantees are in charge of organising themselves their registration, travel and accommodation. In order to reduce the carbon footprint, the FNR strongly encourages grantees to travel to ESOF by public transport or by car pooling (covoiturage).

Proof of participation

EuroScience requests a proof of onsite participation at ESOF in the form of a brief report on their ESOF experience (max. 2 p, incl. pictures), to be submitted by each of the grantees to EuroScience within 2 weeks after the end of the ESOF conference.

For candidates not retained for the travel grant

Candidates under PRIDE, AFR, IF or IPBG funding, who have not been retained for the travel grant and who wish to participate at ESOF, may use their training&mobility allowance to cover their participation costs.
