The PhD thesis of Luxembourg national Alex Gansen, funded through the FNR’s AFR scheme, has been ranked the best PhD thesis in Computational Mechanics in the United Kingdom by the UK Association of Computational Mechanics (UKACM).
Dr Gansen PhD’s thesis was undertaken jointly at Swansea University in the United Kingdom, as well as at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). As part of the PhD, Gansen investigated how electromagnetic waves interact with matter:
“My task was to develop better numerical algorithms for solving Maxwell’s equations faster and with lower memory requirements. Furthermore, I worked on the simulation of so called metamaterials, these are artificial materials with properties that do not exist in nature. They lead to very challenging interactions with light.”
Alex Gansen is currently competing on the European level, representing UK for the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) Award. He is currently a Postdoc at the University of Luxembourg.
