The FNR is pleased to announce that two young promising researchers from Luxembourg are among the 600 young scientists selected by the Lindau Selection Committee to attend the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. The 2018 Meeting, dedicated to physiology and medicine, takes place from 24 – 29 June in Lindau, Germany.
The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings take place every year since 1951 and are designed as a forum for exchange, networking and inspiration. In Lindau, excellent young researchers meet the most acclaimed scientists of their field.
The young scientists selected for 2018 are outstanding undergraduate students, graduate students and post-docs under the age of 35, conducting research in the field of physiology and medicine. They have successfully passed a multi-stage international selection process. More than 130 academic partners worldwide – academies, universities and foundations – nominated the candidates for participation.
The two candidates from Luxembourg, who successfully passed a multi-step international selection process (incl. a pre-selection by the FNR), and whose attendance is co-funded by the FNR, are:
Gavin Rutledge
Gavin, a Luxembourg national, is a final-year PhD student at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom. His PhD project involves analysing the DNA sequences of human malaria parasites to elucidate their evolutionary history and to better understand the genetic basis of antimalarial drug resistance.
Davide Franchina
Davide is a PhD student in the Experimental and Molecular Immunology Group group of FNR ATTRACT Fellow Prof Dr Dirk Brenner at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH). As part of his PhD project, funded through the FNR’s AFR Bilateral Call with RIKEN (Japan), Davide wants to understand how cellular stress in the form of reactive oxygen species interferes with the immune response. In particular, he will dissect the functionality and metabolic profile of B cells at the steady state and in B cell-related humoral responses.

About the 2018 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting
At the 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (#LiNo18), dedicated to physiology and medicine, 43 Nobel Laureates will meet 600 international young scientists.
Three newly minted Nobel Laureates will come to Lindau in 2018: the two biologists Michael Rosbash and Michael Young, who were honoured for their research on the inner clock, have confirmed their participation as well as the German-American chemist Joachim Frank. Alongside the inner clock, the key topics of the 68th Lindau Meeting are the role of science in a ‘post-factual era’, gene therapy and scientific publishing practices.
